Royal Ontario Museum Celebrates 100 Years

Royal Ontario Museum
Musee Royal De L'Ontario
1914 - 2014

The sender writes:
I had the privilege of going to the ROM in Toronto.  It reminded my of the Smithsonian, and I enjoyed it very much.  The special exhibit was called "The Forbidden City Collection" - it was stunning.  I am quite sure that I will never again see such rare pieces, but I have my memory and that will have to suffice.  If you ever have the chance, I highly recommend a visit to the museum.

This postcard is postmarked in 2014 with a pre-printed stamp from Canada.  I don't know why, but it was bumped by the post office, 'Return to Sender'.  Luckily the sender is a friend of mine, so the next time we got together, she handed it to me.

Two Irish Songs for Saint Patrick's Day

The Maid of Erin

COME BACK TO ERIN.

Come back to Erin, Mavourneen, Mavourneen,
Come back, Aroon, to the land of my birth;
Come with the shamrocks and spring-time, Mavourneen,
And its Killarney shall ring with our mirth.
Sure, when we lent you to beautiful England,
Little we thought of the lone winter days.
Little we thought of the hush of the star shine
Over the mountains, the bluffs And the brays.

Chorus.
Come back to Erin, Mavourneen, Mavourneen,
Come back again to the land of my birth;
Come back to Erin, Mavourneen, Mavourneen,
And its Killarney shall ring with our mirth.

 The Maid of Erin

KATHLEEN MAVOURNEEN

Kathleen, mavourneen, the grey dawn is breaking,
The horn of the hunter is heard on the hill.
The lark from her light wing the bright dew is shaking,
Kathleen, mavourneen, what! Slumbering still?

Oh, hast thou forgotten how soon we must sever?
Oh, hast thou forgotten this day we must part?
It may be for years, and it may be forever,
Then why art thou silent, thou voice of my heart?
It may be for years and it may be forever,
Then why art thou silent, Kathleen, mavourneen?

Erin Go Bragh
Ser N 801

This unused postcard is from 1908.

"Kathleen Mavourneen" is a song, written in 1837, composed by Frederick Crouch with lyrics by Marion Crawford. It was popular during the American Civil War. "Mavourneen" is a term of endearment derived from the Irish Gaelic mo mhuirnín, meaning "my beloved."

Several silent films were titled "Kathleen Mavourneen" with the first such drama being produced in 1906 starring Kitty O'Neil, Walter Griswoll and H.L. Bascomb. Other such silent film titles were produced in 1911, 1913, and 1919. This last one starred Theda Bara. Two other films with this title, but using sound, were produced in 1930 and 1937.

La Brea Tar Pits

Saber-toothed Cat Skeleton
Smilodon fatalis
The saber-toothed cat was a powerful and efficient hunter.  It used its powerful forelimbs to pull down its prey, such as bison and camels.  The saber-toothed cat probably bit into the unprotected, softer undersides of its prey so that its long slender canines wouldn't be broken by their bones.

This postcard is postmarked in 2014 with two vintage USA stamps.

The La Brea Tar Pits are a group of tar pits in urban Los Angeles, California. Natural asphalt (also called pitch or tar—brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in this area for thousands of years. The tar is often covered with dust, leaves, or water. Over many centuries, the bones of animals that were trapped in the tar were preserved. The George C. Page Museum is dedicated to researching the tar pits and displaying specimens from the animals that died there. The La Brea Tar Pits are a registered National Natural Landmark.

This unused postcard was printed in 2013.

In the early years of Saturday Night Live, John Belushi (January 24, 1949 – March 5, 1982) portrayed an archetypal samurai—he had a dedicated concept of honor, spoke only (mock) Japanese, and wielded a Japanese sword. Each sketch had him located in a different place and time that was typically inappropriate for a samurai, yet he performed his tasks perfectly, despite scaring his clients quite a few times.
