An Older Woman Spinning Thread in Russia

The back of the wonderful postcard only reads: Printed in Russia, 2013.

This is postmarked in 2014 with three Russian stamps.

This is one lady that looks like she would have great stories to tell.  I wonder if her grandma taught her to spin thread or yarn, or what ever craft she is doing, when she was a young girl.

Origin of the Tiger Paw at Clemson University, South Carolina

Origin of the Clemson Tiger Paw
Clemson University, South Carolina

Efforts to upgrade the image of the university in 1970 resulted in the assistance of Greeville's Henderson Advertising Agency.  The agency designed the paw print, an actual cast from the foot of a tiger.  The symbol of Clemson University spread like wildfire and is now reproduced on every material imaginable.  Schools and universities throughout the country have now copied this success.

Phantom of the Opera, Movies and Broadway

Phantom of the Opera

I bought several movie postcards in the Orlando, Florida airport at the Universal Studios store.  Each card cost $1.25

This postcard is unused and was bought in 2009.

The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 American silent horror film. The film featured Lon Chaney in the title role as the deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to force the management to make the woman he loves a star. It is most famous for Lon Chaney's intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film's premiere.

Highlights of New York
From the depths of the Majestic Theater - The Phantom of the Opera strikes every night... To standing ovations.

I bought this one in 2011. It has never been mailed.

- - - - - - -

The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux ,(6 May 1868 – 15 April 1927).  It was first published as a series of stories in Le Gaulois (a French newspaper) from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. Initially, the story sold very poorly upon publication in book form and was even out of print several times during the twentieth century; it is overshadowed by the success of its various film and stage adaptations. The most notable of these were the 1925 film depiction, Ken Hill's 1976 musical at the Theatre Royal Stratford East followed ten years later by Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical that in turn inspired the 2004 film adaptation.

National Star Spangled Banner Centennial in 1914

Don't Forget the Date

National Star Spangled Banner Centennial, Baltimore, Maryland
September 6, to 13, 1914.

unused

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

On Sept. 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key visited the British fleet in Chesapeake Bay to secure the release of Dr. William Beanes, who had been captured after the burning of Washington, DC. The release was secured, but Key was detained on ship overnight during the shelling of Fort McHenry, one of the forts defending Baltimore. In the morning, he was so delighted to see the American flag still flying over the fort that he began a poem to commemorate the occasion. First published under the title “Defense of Fort M'Henry,” the poem soon attained wide popularity as sung to the tune “To Anacreon in Heaven.” The origin of this tune is obscure, but it may have been written by John Stafford Smith, a British composer born in 1750. “The Star-Spangled Banner” was officially made the national anthem by Congress in 1931, although it already had been adopted as such by the army and the navy.

The Star-Spangled Banner
—Francis Scott Key, 1814
O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever when free-men shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust!”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Three Blind Mice
Betty Boop

This postcard is unused and was printed in 2000.

"Three Blind Mice" is an English nursery rhyme and a song that is sung as a musical round.

Three blind mice. Three blind mice.
See how they run. See how they run.
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a sight in your life,
As three blind mice?

Atlantis Casino - Linking the towers and spanning a seven-acre lagoon, the Atlantis casino is an innovation in casino design.  Brilliant glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly infuse the casino with a vibrant, colorful energy.

I bought this postcard at Atlantis for $2.50 in 2010.

I tried scanning this postcard several times so you could see a little of both effects from the 3-D images.  When you tilt it, the blue glass sculpture turns to a fire red sculpture that looks like the sun with twisted rays jutting out everywhere.  Also the ceiling is square and the  circles in the carpet turn to starburst looking suns and all the blue you see on the wall is an orange-red color.  It really is a beautiful postcard!

Three Postcards from Arches National Park in Utah

Arches National Park

Delicate Arch, with an opening 32 feet wide and 46 feet high, provides a frame for the La Sal Mountains.  This dramatic free-standing arch is all that remains of a thin Entrada Sandstone fin sculpted by thousands of years of erosion.

This is a Mailable Wood Postcard that is postmarked in 2013.

Skyline Arch, Arches National Park, Utah

As are most arches, Skyline is the result of fracturing and erosion of an exposed sandstone "fin" or wall.  The fin itself was a product of erosion along fracture lines.  which in turn were caused by movement deep within the earth.

Double Arch
Arches National Park, Utah

The unusual Double Arch consists of two arches stemming from a common base.  the larger arch extends 165 feet from reef to base and towers 156 feet above the debris below.  It can be seen from the road in the Window's Section of the park.
