Toxic ship

A ship believed to be carrying toxic and radioactive waste and anchored some 40 nautical miles from the Alang coast in Gujarat could pose a deadly threat to marine ecosystems and human lives. Of US origin, the ship Platinum-II (formerly known as SS Independence and SS Oceanic) was penalised by the US Environmental Protection Agency for contamination. It was heading to the ship-breaking yard at Alang and is reported to be loaded with 210 tonnes of material contaminated with toxic polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), besides tonnes of asbestos in its body.

The legend of Fogwoman:
According to the native Tlinglit and Haida people, Raven wanted to marry Fogwoman. Her father made him promise to treat her well, which he did. To honor Raven, Fogwoman created the salmon in the rivers so he would have something good to fish for. Then Raven began treating Fogwoman badly and she slipped through his fingers like wisps of fog, taking all of the salmon with her. Later Fogwoman took pity on Raven and allowed the salmon to return once a year.

25th Anniversary 1955 - 1980

Postmarked in 1980 with a 15 cent stamp - Hand Stamped at the post office, the hand stamp reads: 23rd Int'l Rally STA., Notre Dame, In. - WBCCI 1955-1980

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

the sender writes:
Just a note and a card. Had 3341 trailers. Been pretty warm. We are parked on grass. Our trailer #205 now. It was changed and we didn't even now it. Will tell you more about it later. Love, Mom and Dad

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Wallace Merle "Wally" Byam, (1896-1962) was one of the pioneer manufacturers of the travel trailer. He founded the company, Airstream Inc.

This is long, but interesting:

Byam was born July 4, 1896 in Baker, Oregon. As a young child he traveled extensively with his grandfather, who led a mule train in Baker, Oregon. Later, as an adolescent, Byam worked as a shepherd. He lived in a two-wheeled shepherd's cart outfitted with a kerosene cook stove, a sleeping bag, and wash pail. These early experiences contributed to his later entrepreneurial pursuits.

As a young man, Wally signed on with the merchant marines, attended Stanford University, owned an advertising agency, and became a magazine publisher. A do-it-yourself magazine he published featured an article describing how to build a travel trailer. When readers complained about the plans, Byam tried them out for himself. Indeed, he discovered the plans were flawed.

Byam was thus inspired to build his own travel trailer. While he considered his first attempt primitive, the design profoundly influenced the evolution of travel trailers. By dropping the floor down between the wheels and raising the ceiling height, his design made it possible for occupants to stand straight upright when inside the trailer. Byam wrote an article describing how to build his trailer for under $100 - this time drawing an enthusiastic response from his readers.

During the late 1920s, Americans were beginning to take to the roads in greater and greater numbers. Byam's new trailer was a perfect match for the increasingly popular mobile lifestyle. Byam thus began selling sets of his plans for five dollars each. He also sold complete trailer kits, and finished trailers he built in his Los Angeles backyard. His fledgling business survived the crash of 1929. By 1930 he had abandoned, advertising, and publishing to become a full-time builder of travel trailers.
During the mid 1930s, Wally honed his skill of fusing form and functionality. By incorporating aircraft construction methods to lessen wind resistance and improving the trailer's strength-to-weight ratio, his designs boasted a more aerodynamic and contemporary look.

On January 17, 1936, the Airstream Trailer Co. introduced the "Clipper," and a well-known American brand was born.

In 1955 Wally travelled to Europe with his wife Stella in a one of kind Airstream Bubble to scout the 1956 caravan.
Then in 1956 he travelled to Europe in a Gold Anodized trailer towed by a Cadillac.
Byam's spirit was the inspiration for the formation of the nonprofit club, Wally Byam Caravan Club International, to promote the use of Airstreams to travel as much as possible. The club is still in existence today with more than 7,000 member families. In 2007, the club held more than 1400 rallies and caravans.

Byam famously led caravans worldwide as publicity exercises for the Airstream brand. His most notable caravan was a 1959 sojourn from Cape Town, South Africa to Cairo, Egypt.

Wally Byam died on July 22, 1962 at the age of 66.

(I bet he had many, many wonderful stories to tell!!)

St. Andrew's Cathedral - Scotland

St. Andrew's Cathedral and the River Ness, Inverness, Scotland

Photo J. Cooke

St. Andrew's Cathedral (1866 - 71) stands in a commanding position on the banks of the River Ness in the centre of Inverness. The interior has many interesting features. On the outside transept window facing the river are a wheel and a horse on each side of the arch. The stones for the walls had been lifted by a pulley and a horizontal wheel pulled round by a horse. Nearing the end of the construction a stone fell and killed the horse which is now remembered by the memorial. The Cathedral has eleven bells, ten for ringing and one for tolling, and they can also be chimed.

This was postmarked in 1990 with a purple queen, Great Britain stamp.

Mabel Tainter Theater, Menomonie, Wisconsin

Mabel Tainter
Theater
A restored Victorian theater in downtown Menomonie, WI

Romantically reminiscent of Victorian days gone-by, the Mabel Tainter Memorial Theater is one of America's premier restored theaters. The lavish 313 seat theater features intricate hand stenciled walls and ceilings, carved mahogany, walnut and oak woodwork and Tiffany stained glass windows. Tours are offered daily, but the best way to experience the theater is by attending a show. The theater's intimacy and superb acoustics put you directly into the performance.

postmarked in 2009 with a 28 cent polar bear stamp

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Mabel Tainter Memorial Theater was constructed in 1889 as a tribute to young Mabel Tainter, a lover of music and the arts, who died in 1886 at the age of nineteen. The Memorial was commissioned by Captain and Mrs. Andrew Tainter. Andrew was one of the lumber barons for Knapp, Stout & Co.

The Theater still contains the original Steere & Turner tracker pipe organ. The organ has a total of 1597 pipes and 28 stops. The pipes range from 2 inches to 16 feet. The organ was originally water powered, but it was later converted to electric. The organ's restoration began in 1957 and since then has been fully restored.

Caernarfon Castle in Wales, Great Britain

Caernarfon is the County town of Gwyedd, which lost to Cardiff its bid to become the Welsh capital back in 1957. Yet it still maintains a certain status, and is fast becoming the main media centre for Wales. It is, of course, also one of Wales' major tourist honeypots, the main draw being its 13th century castle and town walls. In 1969 Prince Charles was invested here as Prince of Wales.

Spetses is an island of Greece, sometimes included as one of the Saronic Islands. The town of Spetses (pop. 3,846 in 2001) is the only large settlement on the island.

Ferries and high-speed hydrofoils arrive regularly on the island. The use of motor vehicles is severely restricted on the island, so the public transportation system is generally provided by horse & carriage and water taxis. Some conventional taxis and buses are in operation, but they require a special license. The inhabited area is so compact that most people use scooters, bicycles or walk throughout the island.

Tourism is and has been a major industry. People have bathed in its pools for thousands of years. It has been badly damaged in some areas, and so there are now efforts to restore the springs.

Guayaquil, officially Santiago de Guayaquil, is the largest and the most populous city in Ecuador, as well as that nation's main port.

Legend tells that the city was named after an Indigenous Chief, "Guayas", and his wife, "Quil". Both of them chose to die before surrendering themselves to the Spaniards.
